Planning free and easy to New Zealand for a week end of September, any comment and recommendation? thanks in advance

A week is a bit short. If you can, go for two weeks. And since your time is short, you might want to fly directly into Christchurch, look around there and the South Island and then fly to Rorotua from Queenstown. That way you dont waste time back tracking all the way to Christchurch, travelling on roads you have already been on. Look around Rotorua and then make your way up to Auckland for the flight back to Singapore.

End of September will be good. Not too warm and not too cold - might be a bit wet, still.

You must be very determined because September is still winter in the South Island .

If you have never been to a temperate country , New Zealand generally has very cool to cold temperatures needing a few layers of clothing.

It can be dreary and lonely coupled with deserted shops generally closing early for no business outside of 3 major cities like Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch.

If u want just the experience it is a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of crowded places then Nz is the place.

Just be prepared for sudden changes of weather due to the prevailing strong wind called the roaring forties.

It is very windy in Wellington, no joke man the wind can feel miserable if you do not have the right layers of clothing.

Hi as others have said NZ will be cool if not cold in September - still really winter. Esp cold in South Island.

Places most worth seeing. Auckland, Wellington, CHristchurch, Queenstown for cities.

NZ is not that gay - nothing wrong with being gay but because there is a small population do not expect too much in the way of saunas and bars.

Auckland is the best for gay action. Wellington and CHC have a sauna each and maybe a bar each.

Cheers

advice will be to take ur time, choose a small region on either one of the islands to go to. I've been to NZ twice, both times South Island, both times for about 2 weeks each, there will not be sufficient time to cover everything, depending on what kind of traveller you are.

First time i went, I made many stops along the small towns in NZ driving from one major tourist town to another. overall, i enjoyed discovering the many interesting features each small town has, from food, to museums, to craftsmen, libraries etc. u might miss this if u only attempt the major touristy places.

2nd time was more of an adventure trip, fishing, white water rafting, open sea kayaking etc.

pm me if u want to know more, i've got quite a fair bit of info on NZ, esp south island. :)

Hi Guys,

I will be visitinng NZ for 3 weeks on a free & easy holiday. It is my first time visiting NZ. I have planned out the places I am going to visit. My biggest hurdle is that as my fren & I do not drive, so we will be relying on train, buses, ferry etc.

From my net search, it seems that to really explore NZ (or should I say based on the places I would like to visit), train will not bring me to the very place itself. Also, for the scenic rail pass, the rail only operates certain 3-4 days in a week. http://www.scenicrai...conditions.html

Question: Is it still worthwhile to purchase a 14days rail pass or should I just buy the ticket as and when required? If I were to just buy the rail tickets as and when is required, will how is the estimated rail expense I am looking at (excluding additional ferry & bus)?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

Below is my planned itinerary:

Date Place From/To

2/8 Arrived in Auckland

3/8 Auckland

4/8 Auckland

5/8 Auckland to Roturua (via the scenic train route)

6/8 Roturua to Lake Taupo

7/8 Lake Taupo to Napier

8/8 Napier to Wellington

9/8 Wellington

10/8 Wellington to Nelson

11/8 Nelson to Kaikoura

12/8 Nelson to Greymouth

13/8 Greymouth

14/8 Greymouth to Wanaka

15/8 Wanaka to Queestown

16/8 Queestown to Te Anau

17/8 Te Anau to Dunedin

18/8 Mt Cook to Christchurch

19/8 Christchurch

I will be available in late Aug - early Sept. Planning to check out New Zealand for 2 weeks. It will be winter going spring during that period, heard will be the best time to do whitewater rafting. Would also like to do a bit of skiing and maybe skydiving if I am still (in)sane enough. Other things can include a bit of road trip, trekking, southern lights and everything in between.

PM me your intro if interested :)

Hi, will be on student exchange at Wellington from Feb to June/July; maybe travelling around the whole country/Pacific islands (if its too cold to do anything) towards the end. If any of you lives in Wellington/recommendations for a student on a slight budget will be much appreciated! Will be great if anyone's gonna travel around NZ during that time period as well.

P.s. accomodation is so hard to get so if anyone has any space/contacts for short-term rent do flick me a message. That'll be really great and thank you!
