Happy Birthday Dina Carroll, wherever you are...

Quartz was responsible for Dina Carroll's success too,
by first featuring her in this Carol King re-make in 1991. Njoi!

Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber for Sunset Boulevard,
here's a version recorded by Dina Carroll, reaching #5 in December 1993...

Before Calvin HarrisDavid Guetta,

there's a Paul Oakenfold, anybody remember him?

Here's him disguised under the dance music act Grace,

alongside British record producer Steve Osborne and original frontwoman Patti Low...

Not Over Yet - Grace (#6 in Apr 1995)

...and anybody heard this version, covered by the British indie rock band Klaxons?

Originals vs. Covers (Part 5)

The Power Of Love - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
(#1 in 1984, #10 in 1993, #6 in 2000)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShN8UIk5-mw

The Power of Love is the third single from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, following its two predecessors, Relax and Two Tribes, to the top of the UK singles chart, scoring the band an early December number-one, being pipped at the post by Band Aid for Christmas chart topper.

Power of Love - Gabrielle Aplin's version is very ethereal. Nice.

But I much prefer FGTH's.

Somehow, they have this rawness in the singing and the music arrangement that touch my inner being.
I became part of the song, lifted to the sky and back to earth by Holly's mesmerizing vocals.
Lol. I just love FGTH's version.

Originals vs. Covers (Part 10)

The song Venus is synonymous with Bananarama,

however their cover version of Shocking Blue's classic only reached #8 in May 1986.

Has anybody heard of Don Pablo's Animals's?

An instrumental version that became the highest charting version of this song...

Venus - Shocking Blue (#8 in Jan 1970)

Originals vs. Covers (Part 11)

Erasure_-_Oh_L%27amour.jpg

So which version is original and which is a cover?

First released in April 1986 as their third single from Erasure's debut album Wonderland,

it became the third consecutive commercial failure for the band reaching #85.

The song would become more successful, chart-wise,

when British pop duo Dollar covered it and took it to #7 in Dec 1987.

Erasure's remixed version of the song was re-released as a single to promote the greatest hits,

finally became a UK Top 20 hit, peaking at #13 in Oct 2003.

So which is better?  IMO, both equally good in its own rights!

Here's a very sweaty Andy Bell crooning the same tune...

Oh L'Amour - Erasure

Enjoy this one,
an Erasure track made famous by this British pop duo in late 1987...

Yup. O'lamour. I like both versions too.

Oooo... I like Bassey's version of Getting the Party Started. I've not heard of this version before. Very James Bond.

Venus...I still like Shocking Blue's rawness and Bananarama's wanton-ness. Everytime I hear Bananram's version, I'd think of Siobhan's raised hands and mindless dancing. Fun fun fun.

More covers...The original - Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill

and Erasure's version.

I much prefer Erasure's.

Hmmm Andy Bell has lost a lot of weight in this video.

After all, tomorrow is another day. ~ S O'Hara

Originals vs. Covers (Part 13)

I realised U2 is hardly featured here...

Where The Streets Have No Name - U2 (#4 in Sep 1987)

Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You) - Pet Shop Boys (#4 in Mar 1991)

A medley of covers of U2's Where the Streets Have No Name and Can't Take My Eyes Off You,

the 1960s single by Frankie Valli, though in an arrangement informed by the 1981 disco version of the song by Boystown Gang rather than the original.

Virgin Records, the revolutionary British record label launched by Richard Branson in 1973 celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year.

Since its early days the label has staked its reputation on doing the unexpected and supporting the maverick,

creative drive of its artists; as such it's been home to some the most ground-breaking and influential acts of the past four decades.

Can you spot and name the British acts in the video below?
