1. What happened to Blowing Wind Forum for the past 22 hours ? Why do we seem to have a time-gap in the forum ?

a. Our forum was offline for 22 hours of unplanned downtime (25/7/13 1630H - 26/7/13 1430H).

Nothing happened to the mods. The downtime was caused by a hardware failure, more specifically faulty RAM card. Our servers are located in the US so we could not reach it ourselves. The hosting vendor have since found and replaced the faulty hardware.

b. After getting back into the servers, we realized that there is some data loss as the hosting site restored the servers from a 2 week old backup. Because of this, all data in the last 2 weeks are not available. This explain for the time-gap in the forum.

c. Our own backups, along with all other changes we have made in the past two weeks are also missing. We are currently communicating with our hosting vendor on this issue.

2. What does this means for Members / Guest ?

For our readers, the following that you may have done in the last 2 weeks are all lost.

a. Forum posts/replies

b. Personal Messages (PM)

c. Profile modification

d. Accounts created

We apologize for the trouble that readers will have to re-submit all their missing posts and messages made. And that newly registered members will have to create a new account again.

3. What are the Admins/Mods doing ?

a. The Admins/Moderators are still monitoring the situation. We will be evaluating options for a More Stable & Reliable Hosting Site (still in the US).

b. Money is always an issue. But we are also looking at the possibility of procuring a secondary site and remote backup to prevent data loss in the future.

c. Our sincere apologies as we should not have being so "penny-pinching" when it comes to hosting.

d. For readers facing any technical difficulties, please contact us at forum[at]blowingwind.org.

e. Together, let us move forward and make Blowing Wind better and even more stable than before!

Yeah.

Data loss is nothing much.

So we'll just establish new posts and new msgs.

Connections matter more than the words we use to make them anyway.

Why never data loss till seannyshortiecake is not registered yet

What a nice explanation and what a nice attitude for basically unpaid work. Thanks very much to you Bern and also to the other mods, also to the people who do work unseen and unthanked by us.

 

Interestingly enough, I think it highlights how much BW is part of our routine, our life, gay and otherwise. Also, I hope that people come to realise that it is one of the very few tools that unite us as Gay Singaporeans/Malaysians/Asians, in Singapore and to some extent, outside of Singapore. People should think twice before abusing the priviledge of having something like this forum.

Yes, thanks for resolving the technical glitch in the shortest time possible :)

Just like the haze has helped us appreciate the fresh air we have been taking for granted everyday, this technical glitch will oso help many of us to learn to be more appreciative of this forum :D

Absence does makes the heart goes fonder..

Incidents like this and that "blackout" tells me that BW is part of my dinner relaxant at the end of each workday.

 

You guys are absolutely marvelous in your execution and there is NO need to apologise.

Thank you for hosting and giving us a platform and relaxed environment to communicate with each other in the community. It's just an unfortunate incident but I would like to express my thanks to you moderators for the above, and looking forward to the changes you mentioned!
